MMO Arcarde Games

SOKAH'S ARCADE GUIDE

Okay so how many of you played street fighter 2 with your best mates as a kid, hours spent pounding the absolute dog piss out of each other in 2D or intentionally losing while playing Chun-Li so she would  fall on her back and your could see what color her knickers were (hey she had a great ass).

This is the first is a series of articles by myself, taking your around some of the fringe areas of gaming.

Read on, learn how to make your PC run mid 90's arcade classics and how to  connect these game over the internet for multiplayer matches with guildies, friends or complete strangers.

The Emulation Scene (Mini FAQ)

  • An Emulator is a program that makes your computer think it is another type of computer.
  • Viable Emulators have been around since the mid 1990's for anything from an Atari 2600 to Capcom System 3 arcade boards.
  • Emulators themselves are totally legal, they allow you to load a memory dump of a game for their respective system called a ROM.
  • Roms : the legality of these files is questionable, however as they no-longer generate their authors any notable income no-one seems to get upset. You are however supposed to own the original arcade game to legally own a ROM.
  • More recently as Emulators have improved, it has become possible to initiate net play trough a system called Kaleira.

What you need and where to get it:

The Emulator:

There are many fine emulators out there, for the purpose of this article I would suggest Kawaks.

ROMS:

Download them here - the site is slow as hell:
A good game to start with is Street Fighter 2 Alpha 3

dont touch what you cant afford. [wink] How to make it all work

Unzip winkawaks159.zip into a folder of your choice.
Copy the streetfighter.zip file into the "/roms/cps2/" sub folder within the Kawaks folder. (DO NOT UNZIP IT).

n.b. different types of games run on different sets of arcade hardware, you will notice a neogeo, cps1 & cps2 folder.
Different games will need to be copied into their respective folders. Luckily Kawaks makes this easy by telling you which games it can play and what hardware they were made for in its selection screen.

Load "winkawaks.exe"

SINGLE PLAYER MODE
**Select "File" + "Load Game" for single player. It is advised to select show only available + rescan all.

Keys are customisable.

1 Player Start F1
Credit F3
Directions Arrows
Punches A+S+D
Kicks Z+X+C

Re-familiarised yourself with the game, play around with the emulator and settings.

OKAY NOW FOR INTERNET MULTI PLAYER
You will need another guild member with the emulator + the same rom set as yourself.

**select "File" + "Net Play"
This will load the Kaillera Client.

1. Enter your username and click on refresh server list.
2. Use team speak to figure out which server both of you are going to join.
3. You both want a server with under a 100ms ping else the game will be laggy.
4. Join the server, one person host's a game and the other person joins their game, simple.

Pretty cool. I might take a look at the software (btw i think you put a sound file in it and you might not want to cause it sets off the browser warnings)
